Overview of The Department
The Department of Veterinary Surgery has been a long awaited demand and requirement of the veterinary surgeons and professionals in Pakistan and abroad. Historically Surgery Section had been concerned with the teaching, research and clinical work with regards to surgical problems of various animals, when the institution had the status of college (College of Veterinary Sciences, Lahore). With the up-gradation of the institution into university (University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore), Department of Clinical Medicine and Surgery was developed to serve its purpose. It was later developed into Department of Veterinary Surgery and Pet Sciences. Keeping in view the international standards of specialization, the current department (Department of Veterinary Surgery) was developed so that it could prosper in it’s domains.
The department is the leading department which is responsible for the training of undergraduate students and postgraduate scholars in the field of Veterinary Surgery. This is a multidimensional department where educational, scientific and clinical activities are fully integrated with those of the entire University and the Profession. The department works hard to improve the health and well-being of animals and help in the subsistence and livelihood of people engaged with working and production animals, which ultimately helps to strengthen the economy of Pakistan. Furthermore, it also helps to train and develop human resource pool by educating and training of various segments of population by providing effective and centered education, conducting research according to local conditions and international standards, and at the same time providing veterinary services to various components and industries.
The department trains and educates students in the field of Veterinary Surgery to become leading surgeons, clinicians, academicians and researchers. The development and training of veterinary students is done in an integrated way in the university where the pre-clinical subjects are taught in the first two years and the clinical subjects are taught the next three years of their education, after which they achieve their undergraduate degree titled Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). The Department manages Surgery Academic and Administrative Block, Surgery Clinic, Indoor Hospital, Shoeing and Forge Section at the Lahore Campus and Surgery Teaching Hospital at the Ravi Campus, Pattoki; Equine Diagnostic Laboratory at the Lahore Race Club, Kot lakhpat, Lahore; X-Ray Unit managed by Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences and assists the 24/7 UVAS Extension Service managed by the Department of Veterinary Medicine.
The department conducts research on applied aspects of Veterinary Surgery. Various postgraduate degree programs are offered eg. Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Veterinary Surgery and doctorate (Ph.D.) in Veterinary Surgery. The department has around 35 postgraduate students in both the degree programs.
The objective and goal of the department is to produce veterinary surgeons and practitioners (both in the field of Large Animals as well as Small Animals), academicians, researchers and entrepreneurs possessing great skills in various aspects of the personality.
MISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT
Mission of the Department of Veterinary Surgery is to improve, rehabilitate and advance the health and well-being of animals, uplift the livelihood of humans, protect and safeguard the environment, and uplift the veterinary profession through the provision of trained and skill manpower as a result of committed veterinary education, research, and clinical services (both on-campus and off-campus), civic engagement trainings to the community at large.
