Avian Research and Training Centre (ART Centre)
General introduction
At Avian Research and Training (ART) Centre, UVAS, Lahore, since 2007, four different close-bred stocks of Japanese quail have been maintained and work is in progress to enhance the productive and reproductive performance of these birds. A remarkable improvement has been made in its productive and reproductive performance. The Quail egg weight has been increased from 9.5 gm to 12.0 gm. The day-old chick weight has been increased from 6.5 to 8 gm. Hatchability has been improved from 55 to 65%. Market weight of live birds at the age of 28 days has been enhanced from 100 gm to 200 gm. Subsequently dressed weight of Quail has been improved from 50 to 100gm (meat weight).
With the improvement of growth rate, feed conversion ratio (FCR) has also been improved. This improved growth rate and FCR helped a lot to economize the prices of quail meat. In September 2008 quail meat price was RS. 350 per kg and even in February 2011, quail meat was sold at the same price. While during the same interval the mutton price increased from Rs. 250 to 450 per kg. The prices of beef increased from Rs. 120 to 250. The prices of quail meat remained constant throughout the interval and the dressed weight of quail increased from 50 to 100 gm. Due to these two factors quail meat got popularity in the markets, in and around Lahore. Even people from the very less developed areas of Southern Punjab started getting very strong interest in quail farming. So, the people from these areas contacted ART Centre, UVAS, with the help of SMEDA. In March 2009 ART Centre and SMEDA organized a two days training workshop of rural women from Bahawalpur District. Almost 50 % of the trainees started their own Quail farming, having very promising results. Then it started a series of trainings and workshops in District Rahim yar khan, Bahawalpur and Layyah in 2010 and 2011.
Hence, it can be said that with the efforts of Avian Research and Training Centre, UVAS Lahore, both in terms of improving the productive and reproductive performance through selective breeding, and human resource development in this field, has inspired the farmers to get advantage from these genetically improved birds. Thus quail farming is being transformed into a promising cottage industry managed by rural women throughout Southern Punjab.
