Hands-on Training: Fish Toxicity Assessments
A hands-on training on “Fish Toxicity Assessments” was conducted on 22nd May 2025 at the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS). The session was attended by 55 participants, with the objective of providing practical exposure to techniques used in evaluating the toxicological effects of pollutants on fish. During the training, participants learned the Comet Assay technique, a sensitive method used to detect DNA damage in fish blood cells. Blood samples were collected from experimental fish and processed for further analysis to assess the extent of genotoxic effects caused by different toxicants. The participants were guided through each step, including sample preparation, electrophoresis, staining, and microscopic evaluation of DNA damage patterns. This training enhanced participants understanding of fish toxicity assessment methods and their applications in aquatic toxicology and environmental monitoring. It provided valuable hands-on experience in molecular biomarker analysis, linking laboratory findings to the broader implications of environmental pollution on aquatic organisms.

 

2024

A one day workshop on "Exploring Cytogenotoxicity: A Biomarker Perspective" was conducted in the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Faculty of Fisheries and Wildlife on Friday, 7th June, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. The workshop covered the rapidly evolving application of biomarkers that has become instrumental in understanding the effects of various agents. It was very helpful in providing insights on fundamentals of biomarkers, principles of Cytogenotoxicity assessment, biomarkers selection and validation and advanced techniques and technologies. The session was bifurcated in two parts. A lecture entitled, "Application of biomarker approach in cytogenotoxicity studies" was delivered and after the informative lecture a practical demonstration on "Micronucleus assay" was given. Dr. Ghazala Jabeen, Associate Professor, Department of Zoology, Lahore College for Women University was the resource person for the said event.
