Development of Camel Milk Value Chain by Adopting Modern Supply Chain Mechanism for Enhancing Farmers Profitability in Punjab

Fresh whole camel milk is procured from different camel farmers of Punjab as well as the nomads coming from the other areas of the country. The Directorate of Cholistan L&DD Department is helping in collection of camel milk from these registered camel farmers in their production areas. Redundancies of L&DD with reference to chillers are being used for milk collection. The electronic data base of camel farmers with L&DD department is utilized for milk collection. The fresh whole camel milk is transported in cold chain to Department of Dairy Technology, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Ravi Campus. There it is being pasteurized at 72 C and then packed in chilled state in one liter HDPE bottle packing in chilled state. The department of Dairy Technology, UVAS is responsible for quality processing and packing of camel milk. The said purpose is being achieved after basic analytical and microbiological testing of milk. The results are helpful for awareness of consumers. Compositional profile of camel milk collected from different regions of Punjab are being examined through lab analysis. The processing and packaging of milk is completed by technical persons under the supervision of qualified professionals of UVAS. The finished product is marketed to urban market in Lahore with proper marketing and awareness campaign. The shelf space of established / well known supermarkets and bakeries has been hired for display and sale of camel milk and products. Milk is available for consumers seven days a week. Milk distribution operations is being executed in chiller vans. Branding and marketing of camel milk has been carried out by UVAS. In addition, the awareness workshops, public seminars, robo calls, pamphlets and advertisements has been planned by UVAS and L&DD department jointly. One dairy shop already established outside the UVAS for faculty, students and local consumers is also being utilized for sale of camel milk.
