The 9th Meeting of Dairy Club (Joint Venture of Alltech and UVAS) was held on Tuesday 10th Jan 2012 at Syndicate Room UVAS. Following was the agenda of meeting:

Dr. Shahzad Naveed Jadoon opened the forum and explained the agenda of meeting.

Mr. Adnan Ali delivered a lecture on “Modern age Housing practices and animal comfort”. During his lecture he discussed on:

  1. Introduction of Dairy Farming
  2. Dairy Scenario in Pakistan
  3. How to Start Dairy Farming
  4. Pakistan’s Livestock Sector Scenario
  5. Dairy & Livestock Scenario
  6. Dairy Economics
  7. Milk and Meat Prices

    1. Poor infrastructure (energy, transport, and storage)
    2. Sector institutions and policies
    3. Access to modern technology

  9. Establishment/Upgradation of Model Dairy Projects
  10. Success stories of environmentally controlled houses for dairy animals and their economics
  11. American versus Australian dairy cows

He told that on a dairy farm 16 liter of milk/day/cow is its cost. He expressed about the cost of electricity in a environmentally controlled shed as one liter of milk. On the other hand environmentally contoled sheds has many advantages over animal comfort and performance. Careful decisions are need of time to upgrade the dairy industry. ROI in dairy sector is not less than 25%.

Dr. Jadoon commented that the speaker should remain in the scope of the agenda and information given should be updated.

Hafiz Wasi Mohammad Khan presented on “Selection of good animals, a process”. He has given a comprehensive lecture on the whole process of dairy farming in which he emphasizes on selection of animals. He told that profitability of dairy sector is a process. Bullet points of his presentation are:

  6. Requirements of dairy farm

He told that it least matters that at which rank we are in terms of milk production. It is important that every child of Pakistan must be able to get milk on affordable prices. While establishing a dairy farm one must be clear about his goals.

During discussion forum various participants appreciated his presentation and suggestions for dairy farming.

Prof. Dr. Abdullah commented on quality of animals in terms of number of lactations. He told that usually good dairy animals gave 4 to 5 lactation usually. We should breed our animals giving importance to number of lactations.  He also introduced the idea of Dairy Expo in UVAS, Patoki. This expo will give opportunity to every organization related to livestock to display their products and service.

Dr. Muhammad Ashraf, Nestle through light on focusing all aspects of dairy farming to get maximum profit. He told that one must be vigilant while making decisions.

Col (R) Arshad Shad emphasizes on replacement of older animals with selected F1 animals.

Dr. Mumtaz suggested that breeding associations should be linked to this forum.

Dr. Muhammad Ashraf, Engo Foods, added the importance of nutrition as basic step of making dairy enterprises successful.

Dr. Shahzad Naveed Jadoon summarized the meeting discussion. Schedule for next meeting was decided with the consent of all participants.
