Dairy Club Meeting, June 06, 2011

Meeting was started at 6:00p.m. A total of 19 participants were present. Dr. Shahzad Naveed Jadoon opened and proceeded the sessions of the meetings. He started by giving a warm welcome and brief outlines of the meeting.

Dairy Club Website/link:

Mr. Rizwan Saleem, Director I.T., UVAS explained the options of making a link under UVAS website. Prof. Dr. Pasha, Prof. Dr. Naseem, Dr. Japie and many others gave their ideas on this website.  Finally it was decided:

  1. This website will be a simple forum website with a facility of sending comments to all dairy club members
  2. Initially only members will have access to this website/link

Heat Stress Management in Livestock:

As topic of discussion for this meeting was “Heat Stress Management in Livestock”, all of the participants participated in this discussion. Following are suggestions given by participants:

  1. Building construction should be proper with a minimum height of 18-20 feet
  2. Use of electrolytes

Dr. Yasir A.D.

  1. Use of vitamins will be helpful

  1. Shed roof should be high enough
  2. Showers and fans

  1. Direction and design of shed
  2. Showers and fans

Col. Arshad Shad

  1. Provision of cool and fresh drinking water round the clock
  2. Provision of Shade

Prof. Dr. Khalid Javed

  1. Shed structure and ventilation
  2. Clean and cool water supply
  3. Proper feeding

  1. Maximize dry matter intake
  2. Provide open area

  1. Consider mycotoxins as major cause of decrease intake of feed
  2. Make the silage at proper crop stage because high fiber will decrease digestibility and intake
  3. Use silage inoculants to increase the palatability  and digestibility of silage
  4. Use buffers and yeast
  5. Feed the animals more than 2 times a day. Go for feeding 4-5 times in summer days
  6. Chalk breeding plan in a way that lesser inseminations should be done in July-Agust

Habib Sultan Zahid

  1. Increase the frequency of feeding
  2. Feed the animals with fodder having dry matter not more than 20%
  3. Feed the fodders just after harvesting

Case Study

Dr. M. Zafar Ullah Khan explained the case study. After discussion it was concluded that 2 deaths in a course of 9 months in a herd of 75 animals provide with the present situation is not indicative of any nutritional issue. Brucellosis can be suspected. Death of the animal was cause due to the death of fetus.
Finally Dr. Jadoon concluded the session. It was decided with the consent of all members that dairy club meeting will be conducted on first Monday of every months with the same venue and time frame.
