The 25th Meeting of Dairy Club (Joint Venture of Alltech and UVAS) was held on Monday 1st July 2013 at Syndicate Room UVAS. Following was the agenda of meeting:
21 participants attended this meeting. Dr. Muhammad Zafar Ullah Khan opened the house and gave warm welcome to the participants. He explained the agenda. Dr. Adnan Ali Significance of Environmentally Controlled Sheds in managing dairy cows during hot summer Bullet points of his presentation are as follows: He started his lecture by elaborating the basic standards of dairy business. He told that for a success full dairy farm an average production of 25liter/cow, house temperature 25 C, dry matter intake 25kg/cow/day and market price of milk not less than PKR 45 is the basic requirement. Then he explained systems of housing. He told that there are basically two types of housing as far as temperature control is concerned:
In Pakistan we are working on Florida style houses as our climate is also hot and humid in summer months. He introduced farms which are currently working under control houses. List of farms is as follows:
He urged the participants to visit these farms their selves. He told that he is looking after Saadat Dairy himself and farm is performing excellent. He presented this farm as test case:
Question/Answers: Dr. Riaz Cheema: It’s very astonishing that there is no mastitis case, what are the reasons. Dr. Riaz: We need to work on our local genetics to develop our dairy industry and why farmers are at loss at the moment. Col. Arshad commented that by doing cross breeding of local animals, we cannot go to the production level where Holstein and other dairy breeds are standing. We were getting same quantity of milk from our breeds in 1930 as we are getting today. Jersey, Holstein and other dairy breeds were had very low production in 1930 but after extensive working they are miles ahead in production and efficiency. As for as economic status of the farms is concerned, there is variation among farmers. Different farmers are following different systems and there is difference in efficiency. A farmer having 5-10 head is at profit always because he has not to put any additional cost. Animals are maintained by his family. On the other hand commercial farms have different systems involving big capital investment and recurrent charges. Dr. Shahzad: A dairy farm in Chiniot is semi controlled one but animals are still under stress and dropped production as well. What are the reasons? Dr. Adnan: Sheds should be fully environmentally controlled. There is no benefit of making them semi controlled. Dr. Yasir Arafat added that there can be an opportunity for these high producing animals to be reared in southern hilly areas as most of the poultry breeders are still there. Major Ramzan: What is production cost? Dr. Adnan: When cows are at peak, cost is Rs. 22/liter and now a day it is Rs. 32/liter of milk. Breakup of cost is as follows: Feed = 600 Total cost Rs. 900/cow Dr. Athar Mehmud: In such long shed there must be cooling effect difference depending upon the position of cow in shed. Dr. Adnan: Yes there can be difference of 1 Co Sardar Zahid: What should be height of shed? Dr. Adnan: Lower heighted roof is recommended to get more cooling effect. |
