Minutes of the 22nd Meeting of Dairy Club (Joint Venture between Alltech and UVAS)

The 22nd Meeting of Dairy Club (Joint Venture of Alltech and UVAS) was held on Monday April 15,  2013 at Syndicate Room UVAS. Hereby the minutes of the meeting are presented for your kind perusal:

Following was the agenda of meeting:

Title

Speaker/Presenter

Integrating Digestion Knowledge on Formulating diets for Dairy Cows:
INRA (1989) and NRC (2001) Feeding System
Challenges and Suggestions to implement in Pakistan

Muhammad Naveed ul Haque, PhD
Assistant Professor
Department of Animal Nutrition
UVAS

About 23 participants attended this meeting.

Dr. Muhammad Ilyas opened the house and gave warm welcome to the participants. He explained the agenda.

Dr. Naveed presented his lecture in which he shared his own research and experience. Bullet points of his presentation are as follows:

Objectives of presentation:

  1. To understand how our dairy animal use the ration for synthesizing milk and its components
  2. How the feed formulation systems (French or US) use this information to asses the quality of diets (the key principles of diet formulation) or some one said “the fine tuning”
  3. Some key issues that must be considered before using the chosen system
  • Not formulating diets that can maximize the production of milk
  • Formulating the diets that can efficiently produce good amount of milk and its components
  • Protein Utilisation in Dairy Cows
  • Amino Acid Digestion & Mammary Metabolism
  • Cow requires intestinally digestible protein not crude protein.
  • Balanced Protein and Energy required by microbes
  • Essential Amino Acid are important.
  • Evolution of PDI System

The feed formulation systems can help you

  • Balance Protein requirements
  • Balance Protein to Energy ratio in rumen and cow
  • Balance the profile of EAA

Protein Requirement for lactating Dairy Cow

  • Maintenance
  • Production
  • Pregnancy
  • Growth (primiparous)

Need to balance 3 things

  • Protein Requirement
  • Protein to energy ratio
  • Essential Amino Acid Supply

Issues While Formulating the diets

  • Large variation in our local feed stuff
  • Basal diets are numerous (issue in balancing PDIN vs. PDIE)
  • Energy contents are low in diets. Improper use of nitrogen
  • Which system should be used INRA or NRC
  • Problems in equation coefficient
  • PDI = 1820 g/d and MP = 1700 g/d
  • Cows model for Buffalo need more careful adjustments of equations
  • The demand of protein and energy/ unit increase in temp?

Note: PowerPoint presentation of the lecture is available on Dairy Club website. (http://uvas.edu.pk/society-club/dairy_club/useful-links.htm).

Questions/Answers:

Muhammad Zafar Ullah Khan: Which system is more advantageous in Pakistan?
Dr. Naveed: Both systems are equally good. Key thing is you have to make database.

Dr. Abu Lais: What is the limit of feeding NPN to dairy cow?
Dr. Naveed: We can feed to maximum of the requirements mentioned in NRC or INRA.

Dr. Japie: As for as profitability of dairy farm is concerned in Pakistan, still we need to feed sufficient good quality DM to the dairy animals.

Mr. Saadaullah: There are two types of farmers in the industry:

    • Their animals are under fed
    • Their animals are fed enough but need to balance the diet.

Dr. Tariq Mehmood: Feed management can make a major difference as compared to fine tuning the ration. A ration with relatively lower profile can perform better if fed properly to the animals at farm.

Dr. Muhammad Zafar Ullah Khan: As we are facing mycotoxins challenge in dairy industry, we are pushed to be very selective while formulating the rations. Such fine tuning is worthwhile to get optimum results especially at well organized corporate farms.

At the end Dr. Shahzad Naveed Jadoon paid thanks to the participants.
