Minutes of the 20th Meeting of Dairy Club (Joint Venture between Alltech and UVAS)

The Dairy Club (Joint Venture between Alltech and UVAS) organized a one day seminar on Mycotoxins Management during the 20th meeting of Dairy Club which was held on Monday 18th Feb 2013 at Syndicate Room UVAS.  The title of this dairy club meeting was “MYCOTOXIN SUMMIT”. The issues that were highlighted on occasion included Mycotoxins Concerns of Dairy Sector by Dr. Muhammad Zafar Ullah Khan, BDM Ruminant, Alltech, Test and Facilities for Mycotoxins Analysis by Dr. Yasin Tipu Quality Assurance Lab, UVAS Lahore and MIKO Management in Dairy by Dr. Shahzad Naveed Jadoon, Alltech.

Mycotoxin Summit

Dairy Club 20th meeting 18th February 2013

A number of 85 participants from industry attended this conference and conveyed their messages to the solution providers through the Moderator of the summit Dr. Muhammad Afzal, Lecturer, Dept. of Food and Nutrition. There interest in types of Mycotoxins, their transferring sources, precautions, management, and hazards to feed regimes portrayed their keen knowledge and  curiosity of the subject.

Dr Zafar of Alltech urged safe fodder production system, feedstuff transportation, feedstuff testing, feedstuff storage, feed regimes, and  mycotoxin binders complete solution.  He also suggested increased flow of information about joint ventures with universities.

Dr. Muhammad Yasin Tipu, Quality Operation Lab, UVAS, Lahore presented a complete range of tools for acute analysis of Mycotoxins at UVAS and other standard laboratories. He also mentioned the availability and time frame requirement for appropriate performance of the devices & multiple lab testing. He advised Chromatography with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), thin Layer Chromatography with UV, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), ELISA reader and comparison techniques. He also forced the cost effectiveness of these devices and quantities for sample collection of milk, fodder and feed .  He further explained that the sample should be homogenized and representative. He added while shipping samples shall be properly sealed preferably  made air tight in order to avoid effect of temperature and moisture.

Dr. Shahzad Naveed Jadoon General Manager Alltech Pakistan Private Limited presented Alltech’s MIKO Management Program. The MIKO management involves different programmes including  Mycotoxin hazards analysis program, Systematic program: Identification, assessment and quality control of feeds and its objective improve profitability and production system with a focus on animal health and performance.

He also outlined MIKO principles  for performing Hazard analysis, determining the critical control points, establishing the critical limits, establish monitoring procedures, establishing corrective actions, establishing checking procedures and establishing procedures for recording information.

Moreover he delivered requisites for MIKO which tell additional information about awareness on Mycotoxin and Mycotoxicoses, build multidisciplinary and motivated team, feed management, effect on performance, profitability and health, synergetic effective between toxins( mixture of grains naturally contaminated with Mycotoxins( Smith et al, 1997, Aravid et al, 2003,) sampling methodology, tests and analysis available-adaptation to new technologies and rapid response plan.

In conclusion , Prof. Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha paid thanks to the participants and appreciated Dairy Club team on organizing this useful event on a topic which is cry of the day. He urged all others to come forward and join hands to solve issues of the dairy industry.
