During discussion session participants gave their valuable inputs:

Ijaz Rahim: Farm visit should be included in dairy club agenda for year 2013. Industry has become mature enough to finalize things related to dairy farms. Case studies of failure and success stories need to be presented in dairy club meeting. We should not trust commercially available dairy farm feasibilities. People avoid sharing which is also a reason of losses.

Prof. Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha: No doubt we have learnt a lot from last four year but to establish an industry four years are not sufficient. There was unpredictable increase in feed ingredient prices and fluctuation in milk prices. We welcome you to present your case study in one of our upcoming dairy club meeting. Sharing is the key to make success stories in the industry.

Prof. Dr. Abdullah: Basic reasons for the failure of some dairy farms are insufficient feeding systems. Cow feeding should be fine tuned now. We should convert from crude protein to digestible protein. We should focus to fulfill the requirement of the cows not to fill their bellies.

Mr. Gulfam Rashid: Beside small farms, large dairies are also not exceptions; they are also in trouble until now.

Dr. Japie: There are few success stories in the industry at the moment. We need to improve efficiency of our housing system, reproductive management. We should avoid over-investment at the farms.

Yasir Arafat: One of the reasons of failures is that farmer always focus on milk production.

Prof. Dr. Masaood Rabbani: I have discussed with Alltech to extend our activities to the field. We have planned to celebrate farmers days. In farmer days we will be offering them milk, feces and blood samples analysis.

Dr. Raza Ahmad: Dairy industry is new in Pakistan. Variability of feed quality is a big issue especially for small and medium holders. Whole the year you have to face this issue. Large farms have facilities and expertise to tackle this issue.

Prof. Aleem Bhatti: Profitability of the dairy farms depends on the systems adopted. Efficient the system more will be the profitability. It is all about the efficiency of system not the cost of animal or feed.

On discussion of preference given to cotton seed cake by small and medium holder he added that they have analyzed a number of cotton seed cake samples. They found less than 15 samples having less than 50ppb aflatoxin levels. There is need to focus on storage of cotton seeds and cotton seed cakes.

Muhammad Zafar Ullah Khan: One of the differences between success and failure stories in the industry during last four year is that farmers trying to make multiple experiments in feeding, reproduction and health management face more trouble, whereas farms running on a quarterly or yearly plan are in better positions. There is need of a proper plan for every farm and when plan is their then they sould stick with it with minimum changes afterwards.

Note: PowerPoint presentation of the lecture is available on Dairy Club website. (http://uvas.edu.pk/society-club/dairy_club/useful-links.htm).

At the end Prof. Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha paid thanks to the participants.
