The 15th Meeting of Dairy Club (Joint Venture of Alltech and UVAS) was held on Tuesday September 4, 2012 at Syndicate Room UVAS. Following was the agenda of meeting:

Minutes of meetings are as follows:

Dr. Muhammad Zafar Ullah Khan opened the house and gave warm welcome to the participants. He introduced the worthy speaker and explained the agenda.

Lecture by Mr. Neville:

Mr. Neville started his lecture from pre-requisites of a dairy farm. He threw light on:

  • Importance of human resources involved in dairy farming
  • Selection of animals
  • Cash flow
  • Role of Milk in farm economics

He further explained that how baled silage better than silage made in bunkers. In baled silage minimum exposure to the air is given after harvesting the crop. In case of bunker and other type of ensiling this time span is longer. He elaborated a cow economics model on the basis of inputs and outputs. He told that producing higher quantities of milk is not less important than producing milk economically.

Day to day economics is important or overall economics of the farm is important?

Mr. Neville:
We should keep eye on day to day expenses but over all cow carrier is important.

Brig. Hamid:
Which cow is suitable for dairy farming in Pakistan?

Dr. Japie:
We need a cow which is give more profit not more milk. In Pakistan a 3 way cross (Friesian x Jersey x Brown Swiss) is suitable. He explained his concept of system cow. High producing cows have problem of fertility.

Mr. Ali:
How to maintain Bio-security and humidity at dairy farm?

Mr. Neville:
It’s very difficult to maintain Bio-security as you can restrict birds and rodents entering your farm. But we should try to minimize the reach of human and other animals to our farm animals. We should follow the protocols if somebody is going to visit the animals. Dr. Muhammad Zafar Ullah Khan suggested him to download the presentations on these topics from Dairy Club Website.

At the end Muhammad Zafar Ullah Khan paid thanks summarized the meeting and paid thanks to the worthy speaker and audiences and announced the schedule for next Dairy Club Meeting with the consent of worthy Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha.
