Biography

Dr. Ali Ahmad Sheikh is serving this highly esteemed institute since 2003. Currently he is working as Professor (Tenured) at Institute of Microbiology. He holds DVM, M.Sc. (Hons.) and Ph.D. degrees in Microbiology. He conducted significant part of his Ph.D. research at Lacombe Research Center, Agriculture and Agri Food Canada (AAFC) and he has been involved in research work as a part of team member for Canadian Integrated Program for Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance (CIPARS) for “Isolation and Molecular Characterization of Antimicrobial Resistant E. coli isolated from retail meats”, “Optimization of Pulsed Filed Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE)”, “Prevalence of Antimicrobial Resistance Genes in E. coli Isolated from Retail Meats” and “DNA Fingerprinting of Antimicrobial Resistant Salmonella species Recovered from Retail Meats across Alberta, Canada”.
Currently he is assigned the duty of Focal person for MLT degree program at Ravi campus, Pattoki. In the lab (UDL), he was performing examination over primary samples received from various regions of Pakistan to diagnose infectious diseases of livestock and poultry. His area of research interest is to diagnose various infectious diseases which are prevailing in Pakistan and ultimately developing control strategies using biosafety and biosecurity measures to prevent their trans-boundary transmission. In 2011, he has participated in collaborating workshop organized by American Association for the advancement of science at Tunisia to establish a global network of experts / researcher to control spreading of trans-boundary infectious diseases.
He is also serving the institute as research supervisor for undergraduate and postgraduate students and produced 4 PhD and 25 MPhils while 03 PhD students and 07 MPhil students are working under his supervision. He is qualified assessor for ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and ISO/IEC 15189:2007. He is on the panel of Pakistan National Accreditation Council (PNAC), Islamabad as lead assessor to assess the quality of testing activities under the requirements of international standards in the area of Microbiology. He conducted assessment of Diagnostic Lab for President’s Camel, Al Ain, UAE on the invitation of Emirates National Accreditation System (ENAS) and now is also on the panel of ENAS and Gulf Accreditation Center (GAC) as technical assessor. He is also serving as resource person in various trainings conducted in the area of Microbiology, ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and ISO/IEC 15189:2007. He remained General Secretary of Pakistan Biological Safety Association (PBSA) and Punjab Chapter head of PBSA. He is also the member of American Society for Microbiology.
