Department of Poultry Production

Compost Unit

One of the major problems currently facing the Pakistan poultry industry is disposal of large amounts of waste including litter, manure, and dead birds. Disposal by pits, burial, land fill, rendering, and incineration is inadequate and poses serious concerns with possible pollution of groundwater and environment. As an alternative, the Department of Poultry Production, Ravi Campus, UVAS, Lahore with the help of Punjab Agriculture Research Board (PARB) developed a technology by which dead birds could be composted by using carbon sources (i.e. litter) that were readily available on poultry farms. Poultry extension specialists from the Department of Poultry Production implemented dead bird composting demonstration on a 120,000 capacity broiler farm and now providing extension services to poultry farmers all over Pakistan.
