Biography

Dr. Zafar Hayat currently serves as Professor & Chairman, Department of Animal Sciences, University of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, Lahore Jhang Campus. He graduated from University of Agriculture, Faisalabad in 1994 and did M.Sc. (Hons.) Animal Nutrition in 1996 from the same University. In 2004, he won HEC PhD Indigenous Scholarship. During his PhD at University of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, Lahore, he got fellowship to conduct research at Oregon State University, USA. His research thesis “Nutritional manipulation of layer diets to produce designer eggs and its impact on human health” is first ever project in Pakistan to enrich eggs with omega-3 fatty acids and to determine effects of this enrichment on human health and acceptability. He published many research papers in reputed international journals by linking the poultry nutrition and omega-3 enrichment of eggs with human food chain. He has been recognized internationally for his research and visited UK, USA, Italy, Germany, Finland, Czech Republic, Hungary and China to conduct research, present papers and knowledge exchange. He also enjoys writing and publishing informative articles for farmers. He has organized several events during his education and thereafter related to professional, social, welfare and communal issues. Currently he is involved in several projects including international collaborative research project “Development and commercialization of antibiotic alternative: phages and nutraceuticals for Pakistan poultry production” with total worth of 2.8 million Canadian dollars funded by International Development Research Center (IDRC), Canada.

Area of Interest

  • Phytogenic compounds as alternative to antibiotics in poultry feed
  • Use of feed additives and latest technologies to improve quality of animal feeds
  • Maternal nutrition for improved progeny health and performance
  • Biofortification and value addition of animal derived food with omega-3 fatty acids and other neutraceuticals and their impact on human health
