Buffalo research agenda for year 2017 finalized
KASUR (01-01-17): Farmer-driven proposals for collaborative research between the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore and Buffalo Research Institute (BRI) were finalized after thorough discussions in a meeting at BRI, Pattoki, on Saturday.
The meeting was in continuation of series of meetings conducted among Buffalo Breeders Association and scientists of respective fields. Mr Nasim Sadiq, Secretory Livestock and Dairy Development Department Punjab, and Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha, Vice-Chancellor UVAS, chaired the meeting and finalized the research work proposed for the year 2017.
Mr Nasim Sadiq emphasized that the research should address the issues of poor farmers and provide guidelines for production improvement of local breeds. He said that the L&DD Department is aggressively targeting the issue of foot and mouth disease (FMD) virus by a massive vaccination programme in collaboration with Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and the UVAS.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Talat NAseer Pasha told the meeting that Pakistan is blessed with the best dairy buffalo breeds in world and “now it is our responsibility to harvest the genetics of this animal.”
Expressed their confidence in the scientists/researchers, the L&DD Secretary and the Vice-Chancellor assured their full support to them for implementing the approved research ideas.
